The Lagos State Government has ordered the immediate shut down of Chrisland International School, Ikeja pending the outcome of the investigation to reveal the circumstances surrounding the death of a pupil, Whitney Adeniran.
VANTAGE NEWS reports that Whitney died during the school’s inter-house sports at Agege stadium, in the Agege area of the state, on Thursday.
Whitney’s mother, Mrs Blessing Adeniran had raised alarm on social media over the circumstances surrounding the death of her daughter whom she claimed was hale and hearty before she left home for the sporting event.
VANTAGE NEWS reports that the matter has attracted mixed reactions from people on social media.
The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed to The Punch that the state government had ordered the shit down of the school pending the conclusion of investigations into the matter.
He said, “We are investigating the matter but as a first step, we are going to shut down the school (Chrisland) tomorrow (Monday) to allow for a full investigation.
“The Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasadee Adefisayo, has spoken with the father of the child to sympathise with him and commiserate with the family.”
VANTAGE NEWS reports that different narratives had been trailing the events that led to Whitney’s death last Thursday.
The school management, eye witnesses and the doctor that attended to Whitney at the hospital where she was rushed to for treatment claimed that she suddenly slumped and died of cardiac arrest.
However, the 12-year-old pupil’s father, Michael Adeniran, confirmed to the BBC Pidgin that his daughter was electrocuted.
He said, “She (Whitney) died from a naked wire from one cotton candy vendor machine. After she touched it, she was electrocuted immediately. I have documented evidence that my child died of electrocution and not cardiac arrest as Chrisland School claimed.”
The late Whitney’s mother had also claimed that the school refused to come out clean on what led o her daughter’s death, alleging that there was no medical personnel at the venue to attend to her daughter which was why they waisted sometime while taking her to the hospital.
