Avoid The Avoidable: Gafar Charges Management And Calls On Governing Council

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Igbesa chapter has frowned at the Management of Ogun State Institute Of Technology, Igbesa and has alerted them to avoid the avoidable.

The ASUP chairman, Comrade Gafar Oluwasegun made it known that the Management inherited some Union agitations which are long over due, but the Management is not showing any interest in any of the issues. This, he said, bothers him as the Chairman.

According to the Chairman, “The Management has not been helping us in the aspect of remittance of Pensions which is not too good and saddens our heart because our pension is the only legitimate source of livelihood/Income after retirement”.

He further stated some of the Union’s agitations as;
a) Non remittance of over 45 Months Contributory Pension and non remittance of over 70 months counterpart pension fund.

b) Arrears of Salaries of Part of 2009, 2010 and 2011 despite agreement with immediate past Rector on modalities of payment which already commenced before her exit.

c) Inadequate offices for staffers to discharge their duties, Unconducive teaching and learning environment due to non availability of power supply.

d) Implementation of salary structure for Polytechnics approved since 2015. CONTISS’15 Migration. The union is not asking for the arrears but the implementation.

All of these issue are further compounded with the recent non-remittance of dues deducted from members salaries such as ASUP Cooperative deductions, Union’s Check off dues, Muslim Community interest free supportive fund, Christmas savings, Staff Multipurpose Cooperative society deductions….etc. Many of our members live on loans from cooperatives and in a situation where deductions are not remitted as at when due, it cripples the activities of such associations.

He also reminded the Management that the Union dues should not be toyed with as the local chapters have obligations to the Zonal and National bodies of ASUP. He thereby asked for the immediate intervention of the Council Chairman to ensure the Ag. Rector of the institute remits all of the aforementioned dues.

In an interview with the Chairman, He said, ” I should be in Abuja by now for an emergency National Executive Council Meeting of ASUP but i can’t go because things are not well”.

Gafar told the runaroundnews correspondent that there is a need for the Management to put a stop to the non-challant attitude towards their agitations because they are long over due issues and He reminded the Management of the February ending ultimatum given to address all stated desires, agitations and grievances of the Union in a Communique of the Union’s Congress held on 8th of November,2022 and forwarded to the Management on 9th November, 2022.

He disclosed that the three Labour Unions i.e ASUP, SSANIP and NASU have met and have agreed to take actions that might not be favourable to the Management and thwart the smooth Academic calendar. He further explained that this was the reason for calling on the Council to address all of the Unions agitations.

Comrade Gafar Oluwasegun warns seriously that the Union will not hesitate to truncate the peaceful coexistence and understanding between the Union and the Management if all of their agitations are not addressed properly within the stipulated ultimatum given to the Management after their last Congress. He affirmed that it is a Congress decision and beyond him to overturn.
