The presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar has wooed university lecturers with the promise of paying the backlog of their salaries.
Atiku said this on Sunday during a Town Hall meeting organized by Channels Television.
The former vice president also promised to increase the funding of the Nigerian education system as he lamented the state of the sector under the current administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Atiku said his administration would clear all salary backlogs of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Recall that ASUU have not been paid a dime for the eight months they were on strike in 2022.
Atiku said, “I’m going to increase the funding level (of education) as against what is currently obtained, no doubt about that because I am a firm and committed believer in education.
“I have undertaken to say, ‘Whatever backlog – we are going to clear all the backlogs and make sure that you go back to classes and students go back to school.”
