The Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has explained why he did not inform Atiku Abubakar before leaving the Peoples Democratic Party.

Obi was Atiku’s running mate under the PDP umbrella during the 2019 presidential election which they eventually lost to President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress.

Before jumping ship to the Labour Party, Peter Obi had sought the PDP ticket alongside his former principal but decided to leave the main opposition party a few days before their primary citing “recent developments” within the party.

In a recent interview with Arise News, Atiku said that Obi did not inform him before leaving PDP and only did so days after he had declared for Labour Party.

While on his on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Monday, Obi was asked if it was true he did not inform his former principal before leaving the party to which the former Anambra State governor replied in the affirmative.

According to him, Atiku wasn’t the only one he did not inform but his family as well, adding that he did that because he did not want anybody to talk him out of making that decision which he believed was best for his political ambition.

Obi said, “Atiku remains my elder brother and it is true before leaving the PDP I did not tell him and other important people in my life including my family. There is a time in your life that you take a decision which you consider appropriate for your own future that you just have to do it because you don’t want people to talk you out of it and this I did to the best interest of my future and best interest of Nigeria.”
