Labour Party presidential aspirant Peter Obi has congratulated former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for emerging as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Atiku emerged as the main opposition party’s candidate on Saturday in a keenly contested primary, polling 371 votes to defeat his closest challengers Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike who polled 237 and former Senate President Bukola Saraki who polled 70.
Reacting through his Twitter handle on Sunday, Peter Obi, who was Atiku’s running mate during the 2019 presidential election congratulated the former Vice President.
Obi wrote: “On behalf of my family, I sincerely congratulate my leader and dear elder brother, H.E @atiku, on his emergence as the 2023 presidential flag bearer of the @OfficialPDPNig. I pray that the Almighty God who sees your goodness will continue to bless you now and always. -PO”
The former Anambra State governor will be hoping to challenge his former principal in the general election after resigning from the PDP earlier in the week to pursue his presidential ambition in the Labour Party.
Following his defection, Labour Party has expressed optimism about winning the presidential election in 2023.
The party appreciated Obi and his teeming supporters for joining the party, stressing that the party would win the election next year.
