As Russian forces progresses its offensive onslaught in Eastern Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Davos calls for “maximum” sanctions against Moscow.

Zelenskyy also demanded an oil embargo on Russia during a virtual speech at the World Economic Forum gathering.

Russia’s defence ministry says its forces have pounded dozens of targets in eastern Ukraine as troops attempt to encircle the city of Severodonetsk

Kyiv’s Western allies have imposed several waves of sanctions on Russia over its offensive, but Zelenskyy said the international community needed to go further yet to stop the Kremlin’s aggression by cutting off all trade with Moscow.

He called for all Russian banks to be blocked as well as the complete withdrawal of foreign companies from Russia and said Kyiv needs at least $5bn of financial support per month as it attempts to defy Moscow’s offensive and rebuild Ukraine.

In February,  the Russian government started what it called a special military operation in Ukraine.

The aim of this special military operation was to liberate the mainly Russian speaking eastern region of Ukraine from the so called Neo Nazi elements sponsored or condoned by kyiv.
