The Senate on Tuesday rejected a proposal seeking to shift the collection of VAT from the concurrent to the exclusive legislative list.
The senate’s rejection of the proposal means that the absolute decision on the matter will be taken by the Supreme Court which is hearing the matter.
VANTAGE NEWS reports that a Federal High Court had last year ruled that states had the powers to collect VAT. But the Federal Government continues to collect VAT despite the ruling.
It was learnt that a total of 85 Senators votes out of the 95 that registered to vote. 44 voted against VAT on the exclusive list while 41 voted in favour. However, the bill failed because it did not meet the minimum 73 votes.
