The deadline for the expected presidential assent to the Electoral Act (Amendment0 Bill, 2021 elapsed on Friday, December 17, 2021.
VANTAGE NEWS reports that President Muhammadu Buhari, in a letter addressed to the National Assembly, gave reasons for his failure to assent to the bill.
In the letter, Buhari noted that the high cost of conducting primary elections was the major reason he withheld assent to the bill.
The president also pointed out increasing insecurity as another reason, stating that the risk involved in monitoring direct primary elections may result in the violation of people’s voting rights.
Buhari, also stated that small political parties that lack the resources and structure to conduct direct primaries would be marginalised.
He concluded by saying that the bill was not in the interest of the country.
