Barcelona has sacked head coach Ronald Koeman following Wednesday’s defeat to Rayo Vallecano.

The Catalan club revealed this few hours after the match against Rayo.

Radamel Falcao scored and Memphis Depay missed a penalty as Rayo Vallecano won 1-0 to hand Barcelona another defeat in Laliga this season.

In a statement on Barca’s website, the club said, “FC Barcelona has relieved Ronald Koeman of his duties as first team coach. The president of the club, Joan Laporta, informed him of the decision after the defeat against Rayo Vallecano. Ronald Koeman will say goodbye to the squad on Thursday at the Ciutat Esportiva.

“FC Barcelona wishes to thank him for his service to the Club and wishes him all the best in his professional career.”

Barcelona were seeking a positive response to the loss to Real Madrid in the elclasico on Sunday, instead they tasted yet another loss.

The result lifts Rayo Vallecano up to fifth place in the La Liga table after a strong start to the season, while Barcelona slumped to ninth.
