Military Begins Operation Against Killings, Unrest In South East

The Nigerian military on Monday, began a special operation to combat rising insecurity in the South East.

VANTAGE NEWS reports that military and police vans were seen on the streets of Awka, Owerri and Enugu on Monday.

The Army, at a press conference in Awka, the Anambra State capital indicated that the operation was aimed at combating the excesses of the ‘unknown gunmen’ operating in the geopolitical zone.

Insecurity has been growing in the region in recent months with high profile assassinations and mass murder.

Some hoodlums have also been on rampage in the process of enforcing the sit-at-home order which the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) said it had suspended weeks ago.

Last week Tuesday, nine persons including Dr Chike Akunyili, the widower of the late Minister of Information, Prof Dora Akunyili, were killed by gunmen at Nkpor in the Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
