Defending champions, Manchester City were beaten 1-0 by a Tottenham side without their star striker, Harry Kan who was left out of the match day squad over his reported desire to move to the Etihad.
Manchester United were the biggest winners on the first day of the new league season scoring 5 past Leeds United in a 5-1 win at Old Trafford.
