A special unit of the Federal Fire Service would start carrying guns while discharging its official duties.
This was disclosed in Jos on Saturday by the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola.
According to Aregbesola, the unit will be called the “Fire Police,” and their duty would be to provide protection to it’s officials during operations.
Aregbesola, who spoke during the opening of the National Council on Fire, was quoted in a statement issued in Abuja by the Director of Press, Blessing Lere-Adam.
The decision to create the unit is “part of efforts to address the challenges often faced by firefighters during operations, through mob action and vandalism of firefighting assets in the country”.
