There was pandemonium Saturday morning as military operatives and unknown gunmen exchanged gunfire in Ebem, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.
VANTAGE NEWS learnt that the unknown gunmen stormed the popular Ebem motor park and started shooting sporadically on Saturday morning.
Soldiers attached to the 14 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Ohafia moved to the scene and started firing at the gunmen.
A soldier was reportedly shot during the gunfire and later taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia for treatment.
It was learnt that the situation caused panic in the whole town, forcing residents of Elu, Amangwu, Ebem and Amaekpu to flee to neighbouring villages to avoid being caught up in the crossfire.
Police officials are yet to confirm the incident but a source in the town told our corespondent that the gunmen retreated following the intervention of the military officers that stormed the scene from the army base in the town.
