Manchester United were consigned to a dramatic 11-10 penalty shootout defeat against Villarreal in the Europa League final after a 1-1 draw in Gdansk, Poland, with David de Gea missing a penalty.

The Yellow Submarines who have Nigeria’s Samuel Chukwueze who couldn’t play due to injury in their team took a first-half lead in the 29th minute when Gerard Moreno met Daniel Parejo’s free-kick to steer home his 30th goal in all competitions in front of 9,500 supporters.

United, winners of the competition under Jose Mourinho in 2017, levelled thanks to the razor-sharp finishing of Edinson Cavani, who struck his 16th goal in his last 11 Europa League starts in the 55th minute.

Both teams would go on to play extra time with nothing to separate them, but Geronimo Rulli proved the hero during a marathon shootout, first converting his own penalty before keeping out De Gea’s effort to hand Unai Emery a fourth Europa League title.
