There was pandemonium at the New Artisan market, Enugu, on Thursday as Hausa cattle traders attacked government officials and police operatives.
VANTAGE NEWS learnt that the government officials and the police officers went to demolish the market because of the security threat is poses to the government house.
A State High Court Court had earlier declared the market a security threat because of its proximity to the state government house.
An eyewitness told VANTAGE NEWS that some of the traders brought out AK-47 rifles and chased away the government officials and the police officers that escorted them to the market.
The traders also seized two bulldozers deployed by the state government for the demolition of the market and also destroyed a police Hilux van abandoned by the officers when the AK-47-wielding traders attacked them.
Mohammed Aliyu, the state Commissioner of Police who confirmed the incident, expressed shock over the action of the traders who had earlier on Wednesday night agreed to vacate the market after a meeting with the state governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
