Unknown Gunmen in the early hours of Monday (today) invaded the Owerri Correctional Centre and a police investigations department, setting offices and cars on fire before releasing the prisoners.

Eyewitnesses told our correspondents that the gunmen freed an unconfirmed number of inmates after overpowering the few security operatives guarding the correctional facility.
A report by Amnesty International over the weekend shows that the Owerri correctional facility built for a capacity of 548 prisoners has 2,156 inmates.
The headquarters of the Nigerian Correctional Service in a statement, said 1,844 inmates fled the facility in Owerri during the attack.
