A former senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has defended popular Islamic Cleric, Sheikh Gumi who recently came under heavy criticism for visiting the camps of bandits terrorizing parts of the North.

VANTAGE NEWS reported that the Sheikh visited bandits in the forests of Zamfara state where he reportedly spread the message of Islam and peace to the bandits and Fulani herdsmen.

The Islamic cleric, on Friday, met with the Governor of Niger State, Abubakar Bello, over the abduction of students and some staff of Government Science College, Kagara.

Photos of Gumi meeting with some bandits in a forest in Niger State surfaced online, sparking heavy criticisms.

In defence of Gumi, Senator Sani, tweeted, “If the Government had not woefully failed in securing the lives of the people,there could not have been Sheikh Gumi’s intervention.He just stepped into a vacuum.”
