Nigeria’s former finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has thanked the United States of America for finally expressing their support for her candidacy in her bid to emerge as the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

US support for Okonjo-Iweala came after South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee officially withdrew from the race on Friday.

The Trump’s administration favoured the South Korean but a change in US government was instrumental in Okonjo-Iweala emerging as the only candidate for the job.

Okonjo-Iweala took to her twitter late on Friday to appreciate the US for their latest support.

She also congratulated Yoo “for a hard fought campaign,” and thanked President Muhammadu Buhari and all Nigerians for their “unflinching support.”

She tweeted, “Grateful for the expression of support from the US today for DG @WTO. Congratulations to Madam Yoo of Rep. Korea for a hard fought campaign.Thank You President Muhammadu Buhari @MBuhari &all Nigerians for your unflinching support.Thank you friends. Love to my family.Glory to God.”
