The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions have notified their branches across the country to commence strike tomorrow, Friday February 5, 2021.

VANTAGE NEWS, on Thursday, obtained a copy of the notice signed by SSANU National President, Mohammed Ibrahim, and NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi.

The Joint Action Committee comprising of the two unions had announced that they would embark on a nationwide industrial action from Friday, February 5, 2021 in protest against the Federal Government’s poor handling of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), and the sharing formula of the N40 billion earned academic allowances paid by the FG.

The unions are also protesting against the non-payment of arrears of the new minimum wage, the encroachment of the academic staff usurping positions originally meant for the non-teaching staff of tertiary institutions, and the poor funding of universities.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige had met top officials of the unions on Tuesday in a bid to prevent the strike but the meeting ended in a deadlock.

After the meeting, leaders of the unions said five of its demands have not been attended to by the Federal Government while committees were only set up to address them.

It was learnt that the committee was set up to resolve only the dispute over the N40 billion earned allowances and complaints about the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System.

In the notice sent to branches, the unions said the strike would go on as scheduled pending any contrary last minute resolutions.

“In view of the outcome of the meeting, the leadership of JAC of NASU and SSANU at the branches are hereby directed to commence joint general meetings on Friday to give reports on the outcome of the conciliation meeting and pass resolutions on the way forward.

“In the meantime, the nationwide strike takes effect from 12 midnight, Friday, February 5, 2021, pending any contrary resolution by the branches,” the notice partly read.
