A fire incident at the Nsukka Timber Market on Monday, led to the destruction of goods estimated to be worth over N200 million.
A report by Vanguard indicates that the fire which started at about 3:00am, razed at least 20 shops, destroying timber materials and machines before personnel from Nsukka Fire Service quelled it at about 7:30 am.
The Chairman, Association of Nsukka Timber Traders, Jude Eze, while reacting to the incident, said that he is saddened by the development, adding that the association will do everything possible to unravel the cause of the fire outbreak.
He also called on the state and local government leadership of the state to come to the aid of those affected by the fire.
“Goods worth over N200 million naira were damaged by this incident. It affected at least 20 traders. I want government at both state and local government levels to come to our assistance to enable the victims to continue with their businesses,” he said.
While on a damage assessment visit to the site of the ugly incident, the Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Cosmas Ugwueze, reiterated the statement made by Eze that investigation will be carried out to find out the cause of the fire.
Ugwueze, who sympathised with the traders, added that his administration will assist the victims.
