The Coalition of Northern Elders for Peace and Development (CNEPD), on Saturday, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the military service chiefs over the worsening insecurity situation in the country.

The group praised the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, for speaking out over the security situation in the country, especially in the north, and called for the appointment of young innovative military officers that would combat the situation.

The Sultan, who spoke out about insecurity in the north during the quarterly meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council in Abuja, stated that the north has become the worst place to live in Nigeria.

CNEPD also attributed the current food crisis in the country to the worsening security situation because farmers can hardly access their farms due to fear of being killed or kidnapped by terrorist groups, bandits or other criminal elements operating in the northern region.

In a statement by its National Coordinator, Zana Goni, the CNEPD, added that travellers on busy highways can no longer guarantee their safe arrival without being kidnapped.
