The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, has said that the strike embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) cannot be called off if the issues raised by the lecturers remain unresolved.

Wabba, spoke when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Aviation to present the position of NLC on the six bills being considered by the panel to transform the agencies in the sector.

He stated that the inability to reach an agreement is the reason the strike embarked upon in March has continued.

Wabba, who was responding to a question on whether NLC would advise ASUU to resume while negotiations continue, stated that negotiations are not done that way.

“ If before the action commences, we were able to reach a negotiation, then we would have resolved the issues.

“We are already on the action before those issues arose. I don’t think that is the best way to go. Government should show enough commitment to resolve the issue once and for all,” he added.

Commenting on the issue of fuel hike, he said that the government has failed to implement the agreement reached for palliatives to be implemented with time line, adding that the union’s next line of action will be communicated to government and Nigerians.
