A 40-year-old man, Nicodemus Nomyange, and his lover, Shininenge Pam, have died after the former set the latter’s apartment on fire for reportedly refusing his marriage proposal.
According to reports, Nomyange had on Saturday evening visited his lover’s house located on Inikpi street, Makurdi, with a gallon of fuel which he used to set the house ablaze while they were both inside.
Nomyange and Pam whom he was reportedly going out with for some time both died in the inferno.
Despite being married with children, Nomyange was said to have proposed to Pam whom it was alleged he had invested in.
It was reported that Pam, having consulted her friends, told Nomyange that he was too old for her and that she preferred to marry a younger man who doesn’t already have a wife and children.
According to Pam’s neighbours, it was Nomyange that rented and furnished Pam’s apartment.
They expressed shock over the action of Nomyange whom they said did not show any sign that he was unhappy with Pam over her decision not to marry him.
It was revealed that Nomyange entered Pam’s apartment with a gallon of fuel and locked the door before setting the house ablaze.
The neighbor said residents suddenly noticed fire coming out of the apartment, adding that efforts to put out the fire were not successful.
The lovers had died by the time firefighters came to put out the fire.
According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, eyewitnesses told the police that Nomyange was seen entering the house with a gallon of fuel that they thought was to be used for their generator.
She however stated that the police has commenced investigation to unravel the whole situation.
