The Minister for Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, has congratulated Adeoye Owolewa for winning a seat in the United States Congress.
Owolewa was on Tuesday, elected as a shadow member of the US House of Representatives from the District of Columbia.
His election under the Democratic Party made him the first Nigerian-American to achieve the feat.
Election results on the website of the District of Columbia Board of Elections showed that Owolewa polled 81.59% of the total votes cast, beating Joyce Robinson-Paul and Sohaer Syed.
Owolewa, who holds a PhD in Pharmacy from the Northeastern University, was born to a father from Kwara state and a mother from Oyo state.
Dare took to his twitter account to congratulate Owolewa.
He tweeted, “Congrats are in place for the 31-year old Adeoye Owolewa for making Nigeria proud by being the first Nigerian to win a seat in the United States Congress.”
