The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, has stated that the second wave of COVID-19 infections in Europe and America should be of a great concern to Nigeria.

Ehanire warned that the failure of Nigerians to adhere to COVID-19 protocols, the reopening of schools and the high traffic of Nigerians to the countries experiencing second wave could lead to a second wave of infections in the country.

On Saturday, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), reported 162 new COVID-19 cases in the country.

The cases were recorded in Gombe (54), FCT (35), Lagos (26), Ogun (12), Plateau (10), Rivers (10), Kaduna (4), Ekiti (3), Edo (2), Osun (2), Bayelsa (1), Imo (1), Ondo (1) and Oyo (1).

The new figure brings the country’s total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases to 62,853.

While 58,675 have been discharged, 1,144 deaths have been recorded.

Ehanire raised the alarm on Saturday during the virtual Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Guild of Medical Directors in Lagos State.

The theme of the conference was ‘Post-COVID-19 Era: Economics and Healthcare Delivery in Nigeria.’

He also outlined “serious disruptions” caused by the #EndSARS protest across the country as a major setback.

“I fear that with the laxity displayed by our own population, our own second wave is imminent,” he said.

The minister called on the private sector and state governments to help ensure compliance to COVID-19 protocols such as hand-washing, use of face masks and social distancing, among others.
