The Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Enugu State, Pedro Okwudili Nwankwo, on Thursday, visited the scene of the accident that claimed the lives of school children in Awgu on Wednesday.
Nwankwo also visited the families of those that died as well as the injured who are receiving treatment at UNTH Ituku/Ozalla.
VANTAGE NEWS earlier reported that the accident occurred at Nkwo Junction, Awgu at about 4:30pm on Wednesday when a truck coming from the hilly side of Mmaku had a brake failure and crashed on an approaching school bus of Presentation Nursery and Primary school, a school owned by the Catholic Diocese of Awgu.
Many of the pupils in the school bus among others lost their lives instantly while few survived and were taken to UNTH.
According to a statement by the SA to the Awgu LGA Chairman on Media and Publicity, Donatus Okolieuwa, the visibly pained Chairman consoled the families, promised to see what the council could do with regards to the treatment of the survivors at the hospital, to support the families of the deceased, and take necessary actions to forestall the reoccurrence of the incident.
