The Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo, has revealed that the Federal Government is looking forward to reopening land borders as soon as possible.
Osinbajo made this known while responding to a question on the continued closure of the land borders during a webinar organised by The Africa Report on Thursday.
Speaking at the webinar themed, ‘Bouncing back: Nigeria’s post-pandemic recovery plan’, the Vice President stated that the government is working and discussing with neighbouring countries on the issue of border reopening.
He also said that the countries are undertaking joint border patrols to control smuggling along the borders, noting that the borders will be opened soon enough because the joint patrol is yielding positive results.
The President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration ordered the closure of Nigeria’s land borders in October 2019 to check the smuggling of arms and goods in the country with a few to protect and encourage local businesses.
Despite criticisms from Nigerians and neighbouring countries, the government stood its ground on shutting down the borders.
