The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has stated that he decided not to honour the invitation by the Justice Ayo Salami panel because the wordings of the invitation extended to him were unconstitutional.

The Salami panel had extended an invitation to the AGF after the suspended Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu and his legal team led by Wahab Shittu, through a letter, demanded that Malami appear before the panel to substantiate his allegations against the suspended acting EFCC chairman.

Malami, who had boasted during an interview that he would “wholeheartedly” testify before the Salami panel if the need rises, wrote to the panel that he will not appear to testify because his constitutional role does not include testifying.

The AGF, in a statement issued through his Spokesperson, Umar Gwandu, stated he will not honur an invitation to testify before the panel because of constitutional consideration.

Malami, in the statement, said that he had no ulterior motive by not honouring the invitation, noting that “to serve as a witness in any investigation should be a constitutional matter.”

It stated further that the wordings of invitation extended to the AGF by the Salami panel of inquiry “runs contrary to the Constitutional provisions.”
