The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government for approving a rail contract that would link northern states in Nigeria to Niger Republic.
The contract worth $1,959,744,723.71 was approved by the Federal Executive Council during the meeting held yesterday and presided by Buhari at the Council Chambers, Abuja.
According to the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, who addressed State House correspondents at the end of the meeting, the rail line is designed to connect three Northern states – Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states – as well as seven senatorial districts and Maradi in Niger Republic.
Amaechi also noted that Value Added Tax is included in the money approved for the rail project.
It is expected that the 248-kilometre line will aid the transportation of crude oil, the Minister said.
Meanwhile, the PDP through its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiya referred to the project as a misplaced priority.
Ologbindiyan, in a telephone interview with Punch, stated, that Nigerians are the ones suffering from the poor choices of the Buhari’s administration.
He also questioned the impact of the project on Nigeria’s economy, noting that the economy of Nigeria today cannot fund such wasteful project.
