Edo/Ondo 2020: INEC Reads Riot Act, Says ‘No Face Mask No Voting’

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that as part of efforts to arrest the spread of Covid-19, voters in Edo and Ondo States must come to vote with their face masks.

INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu disclosed this at the Presidential Task Force (PTF) briefing on COVID-19 on Thursday in Abuja, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

Yakubu explained that measures like physical distancing of about two meters would be applied, while hand sanitizers would be used, noting that with the pandemic, it had become necessary to wear a facemask.

He however said that voters must not wear medical face masks but can make do with any material that can cover the mouth and nostrils.

Yakubu warned voters against touching the surfaces and leaning on walls at the voting centres as this will not be allowed.

The INEC boss said the commission could not employ the electronic voting system because the laws had not permitted it.

He however stated that electronic balloting would be used in Anambra election in 2021 since the law allowed for electronic balloting but not electronic voting.
