Ahead of the Edo State governorship poll, the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has called for the protection of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members that would serve as ad-hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the election.
The Monarch who expressed worry over the safety of the corps members promised to join forces with the NYSC Director-General to ensure full protection of those in the scheme who will be participating in the election.
The Oba made these known when the NYSC Director General (DG), Brig Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, paid him a courtesy visit in his Palace in Benin on Thursday.
He pointed out the attitude of some politicians as one of the factors capable of putting the lives of the corps members at risk during the election.
The Oba said, “There is need for the Corps members to be protected because of the desperate attitude of some politicians. Desperate aspiration of politicians is not worth the blood of any corps member; they must be protected from any attack”, he said.
Reacting to the Oba’s call, NYSC DG stated that the corps members will discharge their duties in a non partisan manner.
He also said that the scheme is working with the Presidential Task Force on COVID -19 ahead of the nation-wide orientation camps re-opening for fresh Corps members in order to ensure that there is no spread of the novel coronavirus in the camps.
