The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, on Wednesday, held a meeting with the governor and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Godwin Obaseki, and the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Osagie Ize-Iyamu in his palace ahead of the forthcoming Gubernatorial elections in the state.
This was made known through a tweet by the official handle of the PDP, @OfficialPDPNig.
“The Oba of Benin, HRH, Oba Ewuare II, is currently in a crucial meeting with the two leading candidates in the September 19, 2020, guber election in Edo State, @GovernorObaseki and @IzeIyamu4EdoGov at his palace,” the tweet read.
The meeting is understood to be an attempt by the monarch to stem the violence being recorded prior to the governorship election in the state.
Edo State has recently experienced series of politically motivated unrests over the forthcoming September 19 gubernatorial polls.
The leadership of both the PDP and the APC have accused each other of stockpiling weapons ahead of the elections, while supporters and thugs allegedly loyal to both parties have clashed at various locations in the course of the ongoing campaign.
The state House of Assembly has also been embroiled in crisis and leadership tussle over the camp that should be in charge.
Obaseki, who was elected on the platform of the All progressives Congress in 2016, had dumped the party for the PDP following his disqualification from the APC primary election in June.
On the other hand, Ize-Iyamu, who was the PDP candidate in the 2016 election but later decamped to the APC is the anointed candidate of the former national chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole.
